On 1 March 2010, I arrived in the Sydney suburb of Erskineville for the Tiny Stadiums Festival. Roving Erskenville Road for a week, I approached people in the street with a simple request: recall a time you have cried in public and write the story down on a handkerchief. In exchange for their story of public sadness, participants were mailed someone else’s handkerchief to keep.
As the sob stories were collected, I installed them in the window of The Deli Erskineville, where passersby were able to read the handkerchiefs and view the private feelings of people in the neighbourhood. More than one hundred stories were collected.
