In 2012, Catherine Ryan and I were invited to make a site-specific work with artists from the ArtLife group (a contemporary arts program for adults with intellectual disabilities) at Footscray Community Arts Centre, as part of The Mathematics of Small Numbers, curated by Anusha Kenny. The outcome was Ibrahim the Algorithm: Input/Output, a 29-page publication containing a series of collages and written exchanges with Ibrahim Ibrahim, an artist who is hearing impaired and part of the ArtLife group.
Ibrahim was given a series of copies of The Age newspaper and directions about what sort of collage he should make with each one. The publication consists of sequential, time-stamped instructions given to Ibrahim about the type of collage he should produce (INPUT), and the collages and remarks that he made in response to his instructions (OUTPUT). The back page contains a list of the collage topics (SEARCH QUERIES) and editions of The Age that were used.
