Agents of Proximity, created in collaboration with writer Victoria Stead, was developed for the 2008 Next Wave Festival as part of the Kickstart program. The project involved us operating a localised, artist-run travel service based in our own neighbourhood, the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick.
Agents of Proximity explored urban space via the stories and experiences of the people who shared the area. Victoria and I created new encounters in the suburb by joining Brunswick residents together to lead each other on tours of the area. These tours usually involved two participants at a time, with one person taking the other to their personal sites of significance in Brunswick. The participant who was guided through the suburb was asked at the end of the tour to fill-out a postcard that described their travels.
The encounters were documented through this series of postcards and the production of a publication, Brunswick: A Travel Guide. The public presentation during the 2008 Next Wave Festival was an exhibition of the postcards and the launch of the travel guide at a Brunswick coin laundry masquerading as a travel agency.
